Texas Tribune updates on new definition of practice of psychology

A lawmaker wants to give psychologists the opportunity to write prescriptions for patients through changes to the definition of “practice of psychology.” See Mary Lou Serafine’s reaction in this story.

Mary Lou Serafine Biography

As an undergraduate, Serafine attended Douglass College, the women’s college of Rutgers’ University, where she graduated with honors in music and held the Theodore Presser Scholarship in piano. She then earned a Ph.D. before attending law school at Yale, where she  served as Senior Editor of the Yale Law Journal and held the Cullen Prize.

After law school Serafine practiced in Los Angeles in antitrust, mass torts, investment banking-related law, and other areas.  She remains a licensed attorney in California, New York, and the District of Columbia, as well as in Texas.  Serafine’s earlier work in psychology had grown out of her Ph.D. work in education at the University of Florida, followed by postdoctoral work in psychology at Yale University.  She had published scientific research in the fields of psychology and education while serving on the education faculty of the University of Texas at Austin and the psychology faculties of Yale College and Vassar College.
